Gnomeo & Juliet was wildly popular with the kids in the afternoon. Although a modern CGI animation, the film was clearly from a different stable to the big American blockbusters; Toy Story and the like. The humour was more like a Carry On film, and Elton John (who has spent ten years bank-rolling the film!!!!) provided music throughout the action.
Anyway, the children liked Gnomeo and Juliet and gave it an overwhelming 'Brilliant' on the poll board. The one negative comment from the (boys in the) audience was that the film would have been better if all the gnomes had been nuked at the end of the film. But we didn't get the usual Shakespearean finale of the deaths of our heroes. Disappointingly they all lived happily ever after.
An Education was also well-received. I had seen this film before, and was surprised that I enjoyed it even more the second time. Knowing the revelation at the end of the film meant noticing all the nods and twitches towards it throughout the film. It was also enjoyable loathing the oily, weak, despicable male lead.
Nineteen people paid to see Gnomeo and Juliet. Eighteen adults came to the evening showing of An Education. So entries totaled £148.00. We received a £10.00 donation from a couple who could not attend the showing, the licensed bar took £37.00, the sweet stall and teas took £54.73.
We began August with £23.98 in the kitty. The film licences cost £158.00 and the bar purchases cost £19.93. So we end August with £95.78 in the kitty.
This month's screenings are GNOMEO & JULIET and AN EDUCATION; and for the first time at Scrooby Community Cinema, there will be a licensed bar for refreshments before, during and after the shows.
Come along before the screening time; doors open half an hour beforehand and visit the bar. Meet up with the other cinema-goers, and let us know which films you have liked and would like to see.
Entry on the door costs £4, or an annual season ticket costs £40; that's two showings free.
