Last Year in Review
Last year's show was the sixth Scrooby Show. It took place on the Croft and in the Village Hall on Saturday 4 September 2010. The committee included James Arrowsmith, Chris Spence, Tony Spence, Julie Davidson, Phil Whilton, Ann Robbins, Penny Cawley, Dennis Marshall and Graham Robbins. They held three meetings prior to the event, in the Pilgrim Fathers. The work prior to the event culminated in Ann Robbins' advertising by road signs, Star articles and press releases.
On the Friday Mudfords of Retford put up the marquee, and James Arrowsmith and Graham Robbins gathered tables, chairs and stage sections from Bawtry, Scrooby and Scrooby Top. Izzy Marshall, Charlotte Arrowsmith and Liz Barton arranged the Village Hall for cream teas, and filled one end of the Hall with a week's baking worth of cakes. In the early evening Phil Whilton and Julie Davidson received entries for the competition classes.
Entries were re-opened at 8:30 on Saturday morning, and by 10 o'clock the judges were ready to start. Don Skelton assisted by Ann Robbins judged vegetables and fruit, while Rosemary Spray and Julie Davidson worked their way through the culinary classes. Helen Skelton, helped by Margaret Clapham, judged the art, craft and children's sections, and the Rev David Leese of Epworth judged the egg classes. Prize cards were completed by the same team as last year: Sarah Coombes, Maria Foye, and Joyce. At 12:30 the whole team enjoyed Carol Lawrenson's fantastic lunch.
By the time the Show was opened by the Rev Richard Spray at 1 o'clock judging was complete, prize cards on display and trophy results determined. The visitors arrived to view the competition and the other attractions: Jane Thompson's skittles, Peter's vintage tractors, the Baldings' pony, the Pilgrim Father's bar, St Barnabas Church's Messy stall for kids, and the stall holders: St Wilfrid Church's tombola, Tony Spence and Helen Skelton's hot dogs, Penny Cawley's raffle, Ranskill Top Shop's Indian food, Sally Evan's cards, Matt, Jo and Georgina Worthy-Pollard's books and sweets, the pots and crystals stall, Sam, Spike and Burt's steam power exhibition and Ryan Alder's Second World War museum.
Arriving during the afternoon was Peter's steam engine, and at 2:30 the results of the competition were announced:
- Craft Award: Ann Robbins
- North Notts Landscape Cup for Fruit and Vegetable Classes: Peter Turver
- Lewington Award for Fruit and Vegetable Best Exhibit: J A Frow for three white onions
- Pilgrim Fathers Plate for Culinary Classes: Joan Thompson
- Dorothy and Dennis Dunstan Cup for Best White Potato: J A Frow
- Lewington Plaque for Flower Classes: Chris Spence
- Camm Cup for Largest Onion: Andrew Robertson
- Jim Lister Rosebowl for Overall Winner on Points: Peter Turver
After the announcements, Camilla Dunstan sang in the marquee, trailing her evening concert in the church.
Malcolm Dolby oversaw the dog and pet show at 2 o'clock, which was followed at 3 o'clock by the children's sports and tug-of-war. Finally, between 4 and 6 o'clock, there was a choice of music; with three singer-guitarists playing on the Croft, while Camilla Dunstan and her music pupils performed in St Wilfrid's church. Those on the Croft also enjoyed Gemma and Adam's barbeque, raising funds for Torworth's play park.
Sunday saw the return of the tables, chairs and staging, before the Church buffet lunch in the marquee.
Overall the Show raised around £1,000 for local charity.
Aims of the Show
The Aims of the show are:
- To continue the high standards of competition and judging
- To emphasise the local and rural character of the Show
- To provide opportunities for active participation on the day
- To raise funds for local charities including the Village Hall.
Suggestions and Notes following the 2010 Show
Before the Day
- Find the children's cup.
- Specify quiche tin as 7 - 9" diameter to allow some variety.
- Book the brass band from Tickhill Show. Chris Spence has contact details. They are from near Rotherham.
- Involve Matt Worthy-Pollard in organisation; he is keen.
- Supply some hooks for the art boards.
- Supply bin bags, Blu-Tak, hooks, chalks.
- Ask Camilla Dunstan to sing again.
- Buy new cups for the most points in each class, given by Show/Garden Club.
Entries
- Phil should rework entry forms and cards to his satisfaction.
- We must expect and be ready for a rush of entrants around the 10am cut off for entries on the day.
- A third person should work on the entry desk, writing the entry cards which are pinned to the plate. We should not allow entrants to do this themselves as it leads to mistakes.
- Class cards must show class numbers as well as names.
Judging
- Close off tent completely during judging.
- Entrant name and number on entries must be hidden until after judging. Judges recognise numbers and award in view of previous class results. Possibly entrant names and numbers should by kept in an envelope, as suggested by Peter Turver, and after Clarborough show.
- Kitchen scales and bathroom scales or spring balance are required for judging.
- Remember to judge 'best exhibits' whilst the judges are still present. These are often forgotten until too late.
Results
- Prize cards should carry more decoration than in previous years.
- Put entrant names against cups as soon as possible, so that winners will be present at the announcements.
- No auction after show; it is too difficult to organise.
- There should be proper formal announcement of results and raffle. This should be delegated to a practiced MC.
- The stage should be central, with a speaker outside.
Children's Sports
- Rosettes for children's sports should not carry a year; so leftovers can be reused.
- Buy enough rosettes for relay race teams and three-legged race.
- Do not attempt an obstacle race; it is too difficult to organise.
- Use a loud-haler during the children's sports.
- For the children's sports, try and rent some straw bales from Gordon.
Refreshments
- Barbeque instead of hotdogs.
- Print a bigger price list for the cream teas.
- Serve tea in one corner and scones in a different corner, to avoid a scrum.
After the Day
- Remove the marquee quickly after the event.

Layout
A single large marquee will be erected on the Croft. The exhibit tables, and stalls will be laid out in the marquee. Tea tables will be set out in the Village Hall. The public may enter and leave the Village Hall and Croft from any direction.
Organisation
Where an age criterion is intended, then the class itself must be restricted to a specific age group. It is not possible to judge, for example, the best under seven within a class open to any age, as this requires knowledge of the entrant's age at the time of judging.
Entry forms are only required for produce and craft classes. Sports and pets classes are entered and judged anonymously and unrecorded, with winners given a rosette on the podiums at judging.
Returned entry forms will be logged onto a spreadsheet on a laptop. Entries are usually administered by Phil Walton and Julie Davidson.
Each entry form and therefore each entrant number will relate to a single person. This will be strictly enforced. Each person may make only one entry per class.
Each entrant will be given one entry card per entry, stating Class name and number and Entrant name and number. These cards will be sealed in an envelope and place under the entry. Envelopes will be opened after judging. No entrant name or number will be visible during judging.
Judges will be assisted during judging by an assigned helper. Judges' helpers will:
- Keep their tables well organised and presentable
- Help the judges make decisions by offering guidance on the rules.
- Record the judges' decisions on a judging result sheet.
- Take judging result sheets to the prize card writers as soon as a section is complete.
Judging result sheets, one for each section, will show class number and name, award, and entrant number and name.
The following judges and helpers will be invited:
Fruit and vegetables: Judged by Don Skelton and assisted by Ann Robbins
Craft and art: Judged by The Vicar or the Headmistress and assisted by Penny Cawley
Cooking: ? assisted by Julie Davidson
Flowers: ? assisted by Chris Spence
Eggs: Judged by David Lees and assisted by Heidi Robbins
Pets: Judged by Malcolm Dolby
Sports: Graham Robbins and James Arrowsmith
Tug-of-War: Andy Cawley
A team of prize card writers will be seated at a table in the marquee, filling out prize cards as soon as possible after a section has been judged. This team is usually composed of Sarah, Maria and Joyce. Prize cards will be professionally printed to a good standard. Prize cards will be generic 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The prize card writers will complete the class number and name and the entrant number and name.
Produce and craft section results will be formally announced and prizes awarded on stage at the opening of the Show at 1pm.
