Scrooby Chapel to Close
Christine Hawke, Superintendent Methodist Minister, posts the following notice:
What’s in a name? After all Shakespeare said that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. When it comes to children parents have all sorts of reasons for choosing particular names – family tradition, fashion, or names that have a ‘meaning’.
In biblical times this was particularly so. To some degree a person’s name represented who they were, character, role or even their destiny. One of the traditional Christmas readings comes from the prophecy of Isaiah when he looks to the future birth of one who will be a sign from God. ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel’. We know him as Jesus , but Immanuel means ‘God with us’. At it’s heart Christmas has the message that God is not a far off, remote God but a ‘God-with-us-God’, through all the highs and lows and changes of life. That really is worth celebrating.
For so many years the Parish Church and the Methodist Chapel have been side by side, part of the worship, life and history of the village, and since 1994 the two congregations have worshipped together using both buildings. However, over the last year it has been decided to close both Misson and Scrooby chapels.
We are grateful that many people have worshipped in these chapels over the years and there is still a deal of affection for the buildings, but a wider view challenges us to look to the future. Change is not always easy, and can bring uncertainty but we believe that the ‘God-with-us’ God of the past will still be with us in the future through Christians living in the village.
We appreciate the hospitality of the Rev Richard Spray to hold a service of thanksgiving for the witness of Misson and Scrooby Chapels in Scrooby Parish Church 4 January 3pm. We hope to have a display of photographs and mementoes.
All are welcome.
